Section 2 to the upper viewpoint and summit has been closed since 3 October 2026 for a rockfall risk assessment, with no reopening date announced. Kitesurfing, surfing and water sports near Bel Ombre

• Kitesurfing:
  • Bel Ombre (3 min drive): A shallow lagoon on the south coast, with sand near the beach, then sea grass and coral patches, and waves on the reef further out. A kite centre gives lessons from the beach. Strong currents run through the channels, so ride at high tide.
  • Baie du Cap (7 min drive): A lagoon on the south west coast, with a small sandy launch beside the parking. Strong currents run in the passes and boats use the bay. The reef waves are far from shore and shallow.
  • La Prairie (13 min drive): A shallow lagoon about 4 km east of Le Morne, good for beginners. Launch from a long sandy beach with a grass area for rigging and parking. Watch for sea urchins and stag horn coral near the reef.
  • Riambel (17 min drive): A wide, shallow lagoon on the south coast, with a long public sand beach. Ride only at high tide. A strong current runs west towards the reef channel, and urchins grow near the reef.

  • Souillac (17 min drive): An exposed reef break over coral on the south coast, between Riambel and Souillac, open to southern swells. For intermediate surfers and above. Sea urchins and stronger currents than on the west coast, and busy at weekends.
  • Manawa, Le Morne (23 min drive): A long reef wave breaking about 1.5 km offshore, for advanced surfers, reached by boat. A strong current runs out through the channel, especially with a south east wind.
