Ile aux Aigrettes is an islet which is just 850m off the south-east coast of Mauritius island is home to many plants and animals unique to Mauritius island. The island was turned into a nature reserve by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation for conservation and restoration of the forest and reintroduction of rare species. The island is made up of coralline limestone, making it even more important to preserve as it is the last dry coastal forest of Mauritius.
